The Big Picture - Aid to Nationalist China
Experience the American Journey through our country's visual heritage in this historical recording provided by the National Archives of the United States.

From the U.S. Army's "The Big Picture" television series, 1950-1975.

This is the story of the United States Army Military Assistance Advisory Group in Formosa. In a race against time and of constant threat of attack, officers and men of our Army are lending American knowledge and materials to the small fighting Army of Nationalist China which will not be bent to the doctrine of the Communist horde. BIG PICTURE cameras cover this front line of freedom from the busy City of Taipei, its capital, to a lonely beach where the changing of the guard has great meaning for the free nations of the world who stand committed to act against aggression.

Viewers will watch the physical conditioning of free China's soldiers, a toughening process which never ceases on Formosa. Combat exercises are shown with commandos executing amphibious landings.

This historical recording from the National Archives may contain variations in audio and video quality based on the limitations of the original source material.

The content summary for this DVD is adapted from an historical description provided by the government agency or donor at the time of production release. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

Some relief for victims of KaiEn English fiasco as ChinesePod CEO downplays Ken Carroll's role

Ken Carroll is still alive! He's just too busy to respond to Shanghaiist's emails! This is going to be a loooong post on the ongoing KaiEn English fiasco , so brace yourselves. One day before KaiEn's unpaid staff were scheduled to negotiate with the Shanghai Construction Group (KaiEn's Chinese partner), co-founder Ken Carroll's business partner and CEO of Praxis Language, Hank Horkoff,

The PLA's Got Talent, or at least the females need to

From China Daily It looks like those female army officers goosestepping in hot pink miniskirts at the 60th Anniversary bash were a sign of things to come. As always seems to be the case with gender equality in China, the PLA's recent step forward (the country's first female fighter pilots ) was just preparation to take two steps back. Witness: women trying to enter the army now must prove

Shanghai submerged... but not really.

A picture of a deeply submerged Lujiazui has been making the rounds on various internet forums , and it's got Shanghai newspaper Xinmin pretty worked up . The picture shows several Pudong-side waterfront landmarks, including the iconic Pearl Tower, halfway sticking out of the water. The forum titles tend to show the photo with the title that the pictures are from a new study in the U.S.

That Red Army Opera meme hits Lady Gaga's Pokerface

I've been a little wary about reporting on the whole Red Army meme, mostly because it's super old - at least since last year , the musical version of this Red Army Long March opera has been cut and recut to match everything from Jay Chou to Michael Jackson. But you know what? Everyone in the world seems to be watching it, loving it and debating what it means for China's youth to treat

Did the PLA get a name change?

Did you know the People's Liberation Army might no longer actually the People's Liberation Army? Apparently, with little fanfare or an official announcement, the PLA has now turned into... the Chinese Army, according to Strategy Page . Same with the PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy) and the PLAAF (People's Liberation Army Air Force). We can't verify this news anywhere else, and it looks like,

PLA policies being changed to attract college graduates

Hey, newly-graduated and jobless fenqing ! Proving how much you love the motherland now sounds mighty tempting, doesn't it? "The People's Liberation Army (PLA) plans to recruit more well-educated young people and pledges to increase servicemen's income, according to a draft amendment to the country's military recruitment law. The amendment, which is up for review at the 11th National People's

Another day, another videogame blows up Shanghai

Hey, some of that Expo advertising must be working - because it looks like at least one group of people have noticed Shanghai: video game developers who want to wreak havoc on its city streets. Hot on the heels of Army of Two , comes this multiplatform wonder, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days. The game is a sequel to the critically okay Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, and takes place about three
