Apple Daily's newest CG extravaganza: Brown behaving badly
While Gordon Brown and the rest of Downing St. have repeatedly denied the stories of him being a big ol' bully, that hasn't stopped Apple Daily from creating a CG rendition of all the ways Brown could have abused his staff.
You remember Apple Daily, right? They're the ones who gave us the cartoon skit of Conan O'Brien fighting for his late night slot and who left nothing of Tiger Woods' affairs up to the imagination. Apparently, these crazy CG sketches have been extremely lucrative for the company. Says the Wall Street Journal:
The online animated news segments are a big initiative for Lai, who has a history of shaking things up. He went from founding a successful retail clothing business to starting a newspaper and a weekly magazine that both rank among Hong Kong’s most popular, and then replicating that success with Taiwanese versions of both publications. An exuberant iconoclast, he has had run-ins with the rich and powerful in both places (not to mention with China’s government), and has made a virtual sport of annoying journalistic purists with his mix of hard news and celebrity gossip.
Since the Apple Action News segments began in November, Lai’s animators have produced more than 1,000 videos, says Chu Wah-hui, Taipei-based Group CEO for Lai’s Next Media. Most of the content in the videos is local news from Hong Kong and Taiwan, Chu says in a telephone interview, but in December they started animating foreign news as well...
Chu says Apple bases its international animated news on typical sources like wire reports, and that it follows standard journalistic guidelines. “We do it exactly the way everybody does in the print media,” he says. “It is as accurate or inaccurate as a written report. We go through the same process.”
Looks about as journalistic to me as a Lifetime movie special, but if they're all this hilarious, bring 'em on! The English version below (on Youtube) and, if you want to watch the longer Cantonese version (where these screens are from), here's link to that:
